MALUS EGREMONT RUSSET

Russets are highly valued apples, with rough-skinned sweet fruit noted for their nutty flavour and crisp dryish firm flesh. Like all apples, trees are grafted on rootstocks which affect their size and vigour, and may be trained in a number of different shapes. Pruning depends on the tree form and vigour of the rootstock, and should be checked in a handbook. 'Egremont Russet' is perhaps the most important commercial russet, but also a fine garden tree, upright and moderately vigorous, early flowering but hardy enough for Northern gardens.
